Thursday, September 15th was North Texas Giving Day, and in honor of the special day Donorbridge made a commitment to match a percentage of the donations made to non-profits such as Services of Hope. This is a great opportunity for Services of Hope to maximize the donations we receive, so we try each year to make it a special day for the community and our donors who continue to give so generously to support our efforts.

In honor of this year’s theme of “Get Up and Give”, Donorbridge added some extra excitement and opportunity to earn additional matching funds by sponsoring a fun competition. In order to win the additional funds, each organization was encouraged to throw a party. The organization that seemed to have the most fun (judged via pictures on our website) received an additional $2,500 match from Donorbridge.

Services of Hope joined in on the fun and threw an all day pajama party here at our offices. We were joined by members of our community and sponsors, and celebrated the day with food, games, dancing, and prizes to raise money for our Literacy, Character, and Connection after-school programs. While receiving gifts for our cause, SOH continued to give back to our community as well, giving over 40 bags of groceries from our food pantry.

Regrettably, we did not win the additional monetary prize from Donorbridge, but we had a lot of fun celebrating the day together anyway.

Overall, the day was a great success! In fact, due to the excessive number of positive supporters across North Texas, Donorbridge even got overwhelmed! They were still counting donations early this week and we have just heard our final amount raised for Services of Hope is $11,048!!! We here at Services of Hope are celebrating again, as a result – but without the pajamas this time.

Thank you to all, for prayers, contributions, and overall support. Every thought or penny made the difference.

Please be sure to check our Facebook to see exciting pictures of our neighbors, supporters, and staff (in pajamasJ). Feel free to leave comments, too!

Services of Hope had the honor of working with Quinn Chandler, a Life Scout of Unit T261, in the Great Plains District on his Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project.

On Saturday August 27, 2011, Services of Hope collaborated with Quinn and his Boy Scout Troop to fulfill a critical need in our community. The neighborhood teenagers needed a safe, secure, and friendly place to have fun.

At 8 am, approximately 20 Members of Unit T261, Services of Hope Staff Members, Friends, and Family from as far as Pittsburg, TX, all joined together to build a basketball half-court, with benches in the Services of Hope Parking lot.

What is an Eagle Scout Project? The Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project, known as the Eagle Scout Project or more simply as the Eagle Project, is the opportunity for a Scout in the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) to demonstrate leadership of others while performing a project for the benefit of his community. This is the culmination of the Eagle Scout candidate’s leadership training, and it requires a significant effort on his part. The project must benefit an organization other than BSA, but it cannot be performed for an individual or a business, be solely a fundraising project, or be commercial in nature.

“It was a long hot day of 109 degrees. Our team was able to finish on time, and under budget. We were able to improve Services of Hope’s ability to draw new children to their center for assistance and participation in their programs, as well as provide an outdoor play area for everyone’s enjoyment.”-Quin

Services of Hope is very thankful, to Quinn for picking our organization; the community will benefit greatly from his Eagle Scout Project. Having this basketball Court at our center will help the youth of our community by providing a place to socialize, exercise, and just have fun.

We at Services of Hope would like to send out the biggest Thank you, to Quinn, Boy Scout Troop T261, and all of their Volunteers for making this Basketball Court happen.

Montrauious is a 2nd grader at Julia C. Frazier Elementary School. Last year he was a disrespectful student. He threw temper tantrums in the classrooms for any reason. He initiated raucous behavior and would participate in physical confrontations with his fellow classmates on a daily basis.

During the fall semester of 2010 Montrauious was enrolled in the after-school program provided by Services of Hope and specifically the Social Responsibility Training curriculum. After several weeks in SRT classes Montrauious had transformed his behavior from the school “bad boy” to a productive student.

Now, he is a model student. He treats his fellow students and teachers with respect. He demonstrates a positive classroom/school participation and good citizenship.

Montrauious is no longer an angry kid who was looking for a fight, but a student who is striving to make his school better. He is the “poster boy” for SRT.

On Saturday, April 9, 2011, we had 30 children from Highland Park Presbyterian Church (HPPC) here at Services of Hope for a youth volunteer day of service. SOH prepared a continental breakfast, which the children and their leaders really enjoyed.

After eating breakfast, we had introductions and a brief SOH overview, explaining SOH and what services our organization provides to the community. We introduced the Literacy Character Connections program. Anthony White of SOH presented the Literacy component, Keerica Ford presented the Character component, and Donna Patterson concluded with the Connections component of the LCC programming.

We separated into groups of six with each staff member. Everyone was eager and excited about working on the projects we planned for them. These projects included the following: yard work, planting flowers, cleaning the grounds outside, cleaning the building inside, rotating food pantry items, together with administrative duties such as filing, organizing, special event binders, etc.

The 5th thru 8th graders worked very hard and diligently to complete the entire project in one hour. We all had a great time fellowshipping with each other.

Once we came back together, we held a feedback session with the children to see what they enjoyed most and what they would like to see on their next youth day at SOH. There were several children that came up to speak and told us how much they enjoyed being at SOH, and would like to come back. One of the young men prayed for us and we dismissed.

Ms. Teresa, SOH chief culinary provider, could not help herself and fed everyone lunch! The children enjoyed their meal and really appreciated Ms. Teresa for taking the time to prepare lunch for them. It was a joy and pleasure having the youth of HPPC take out time to volunteer with the staff of Services of Hope. A good day was had by all!!!!
